Four Winter Pest Control Myths

Myth #1: Winter Kills Pests

Pests may not be able to survive the cold outdoor temperatures, but that gives them even more incentive to come into your warm home. This means pest control is crucial during the winter months.

Myth #2: Doors & Windows Let Pests In

While some pests will find their way into your home through open doors and open windows, there are other entry points you need to be aware of.

For example, cockroaches, ants, and mice can gain access to your home through cracks in your exterior foundation.

So if you are working to secure your home, be sure to include a walk around the outside of your home to look for areas that need repair.

Myth #3: Mice Fit In Holes The Size Of A Ballpoint Pen Tip

Yes and no.

If it is a baby mouse, yes it may be able to. But it may not be a hole the size of the tip of a ballpoint pen, but a crack that is only that wide.

Adult mice won’t be able to get in through an opening quite so small. It all depends on the rodent’s skull size, but some experts say it only takes a space of about ¼ inch for them to gain access to your home.

Myth #4: You Let Them In

You can bring pests inside your home yourself without even realizing it!

Anytime you leave and come back into the home, or new items are brought inside, you could potentially be bringing in pests too!

If you ordered a new piece of furniture you can’t be sure that a mouse, flea, or tick isn’t brought in with it. Your children may unknowingly bring home a bed bug or other pest in their backpack.
